Macadamia mother tree traced to Mooloo

WE HAVE often joked in The Gympie Times newsroom that all roads lead to Gympie and that the theory that everyone and everything is six or fewer steps away could be proven right here.

Further "evidence" (though non peer-reviewed) revealed at yesterday's macadamia conference strengthens this claim.

Could it be true?

Could Mooloo be the birth place of what many people - myself included - believe is the best tasting nut in the world? Our nut. The macadamia. Best served raw, or coated in chocolate, or chopped up in vanilla ice-cream.

Genetic testing seems to indicate the answer is yes, a single tree buried in the picturesque, rolling hills of Mooloo has spread its seed all over the world.

In centuries to come, fans of the crunchy kernel will make pilgrimages to Mooloo, seeking out the mother tree.

Make no mistake, we too will seek out this soon-to-be famous flora and bring you its life story.

And if the theory is proven, Gympie Regional Council must surely waste no time in declaring our region the birth place of the macadamia, and paving the way for untold business and marketing opportunities.

This could be a truly exciting development for our region.
