Insane video seals fate of Rainbow Beach hoons

A video of people driving along while hanging outside their windows, and a makeshift drag strip set-up are the latest in an ongoing series of reckless behaviour caught at two popular southeast Queensland tourist beaches.

Hooning on Teewah Beach and Rainbow Beach

A makeshift drag strip at Teewah Beach and people driving along Rainbow Beach while hanging outside their windows are the latest round of reckless behaviour caught at the popular tourist spots.

The hoons had used witches’ hats and glow sticks to lay out a course for drivers to speed through at low tide.

Police found the course Saturday morning, along with alcohol cans and fireworks littered across the beach.

They returned later that night and issued notices to appear for drink driving, driving without due care and attention and speeding offences.

Reckless behaviour continued at along the coast on Sunday with police catching a 20-year-old man and his female passenger sitting on their vehicle’s windowsill as it travelled along Rainbow Beach.

A young couple caught hanging out the window while driving along Rainbow Beach were among the latest spate of hooning along the beach.

When questioned the pair said they had been trying to take a “good photo”.

The man was issued with a notice to appear for dangerous operation of a vehicle, and the 22-year-old passenger was fined for not wearing a seatbelt.

Officers received further complaints from people at campsites nearby who had camera vision of motorists doing burnouts, resulting in additional fines being handed out.

Three vehicle rollovers were also reported across the weekend.

No injuries were reported.

Gympie Patrol Inspector Pat Swindells said police continue to urge anyone who may have witnessed dangerous hooning behaviour or have vision of any incidents to come forward.

“Hooning on beaches not only puts the occupants of the vehicle at risk of serious injury, but also the lives of innocent campers,” Inspector Swindells said.

“Families have the right to enjoy our local beaches without fear of anti-social behaviour or vehicles being driven at unnecessary speeds.

“Police will continue to be out in force over coming weekends targeting hooning and will not hesitate to take necessary action against repeat offenders.”
