An unlikely culprit behind Gympie council’s “conserve water” alert to Kandanga residents has been revealed.
On Tuesday, the council posted online urged residents in Kandanga to conserve water as it appeared the reservoir had “dropped to around 20 per cent.”
The alerts are usually only issued in times of drought or amid a natural disaster.
It’s since been confirmed however that the drop was only temporary and the “result of the refilling of the Kandanga Pool by management of the facility,” acting director of infrastructure services at Gympie council Liam Watson explained

He said water levels in the reservoir were rising and the water alert was lifted the next morning.
“No further issues are expected for the area,” Mr Watson said.
Belgravia Leisure, who are contracted to manage the pool, confirmed they were filling the six lane, 25m pool on Tuesday with assistance from Gympie Regional Council for “off season maintenance checks.”
“No further maintenance works are expected to affect the reservoir or area, and we would like to thank the Kandanga residents for their co-operation and look forward to next season,” a Belgravia Leisure spokesperson said.
The pool has been closed since the end of the school holidays in April and is set to open again in October.
The incident is another reminder of the importance and fragility of water levels in the Mary Valley.
The pool provides both a place of recreation on sunny days and in some case is the unlikely indicator of water woes.
