The 5km stretch at Chatsworth has caused maintenance headaches ever since it was built in 2020, along with being the site of many road crashes and injuries.

It has been a pressure point for Gympie LNP MP Tony Perrett, with TMR revealing the $17 million upgrade of that stretch of highway had resulted in pavement failings because of the original underlying highway pavement.

In March 2022, the highway stretch was dug up for the third time in almost three years.

Mr Perrett described it at the time as “atrocious and extremely dangerous”.

This time the pavement will be excavated to fix the “underlying geotechnical issues that have resulted in frequent potholing, rutting and other problems at this location”, a TMR statement said.

The work will take up to three months to complete.

“The work is part of a planned program of pavement works for the Bruce Hwy at Chatsworth, with a total of almost 5km of highway to progressively be rehabilitated over the next few years,” it stated.

Night works are scheduled between 6pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday, and expected to cause changed traffic conditions, audible construction noise, vibration and dust, along with reversing beepers and flashing lights.

Motorists are asked to obey all traffic rules and exercise patience during this time.
