THE GYMPIE Regional Library is celebrating Heritage Week with a large pictorial display of the defining moments in Gympie's history.

Library assistant Karen Salloway has put together the display and says it should be in place on the library wall for a few more weeks.

The display runs in conjunction with the Queensland Heritage Festival put on by the National Trust.

The National Trust has given the festival the theme 'The Making of Queensland'.

Mrs Salloway said the library changed the theme to 'The Making of Gympie' to allow the library to showcase defining moments in Gympie's history.

“It's a chronology from the era of James Nash in 1867 to the amalgamation of councils in 2008,” Mrs Salloway said.

The wall is adorned with historic black and white and colour photos featuring famous people including James Nash who discovered gold just near the library, Gympie resident Andrew Fisher who became Australia's first Labor Prime Minister and Gympie's first mayor Matthew Mellor.

Historic and now demolished buildings like the old Gympie Hospital, the first Gympie post office and Cullinane's first store all feature in the display.

Mrs Salloway also assists in the local history section of the library and said some of the old photos would be fascinating for Gympie residents.
