ANZ bank staff traded their pens for drills and trowels and headed to Gympie to lend a hand to build a Habitat for Humanity duplex.

As Habitat co-sponsors with PMI Mortgage Insurance, the bank staff are helping to ensure the Amba family's dream of owning their own home becomes a reality.

The Sorrell Street building is Gympie's second Habitat for Humanity building with one unit soon to be home to Marcelino and Mary Amba and their children Jared (6) and Jaden (2).

Their participation won the bank an award in the 2006 Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in community business partnerships in recognition of their positive impact in Australian communities.

"With the valuable contribution that ANZ and its employees provide, we're able to keep the cost of Habitat homes more affordable for those who need it most," chief executive officer for Habitat for Humanity Australia George McDonald said.

"It's a good opportunity for the volunteers to meet and work with the future home owners ? an experience that can be both humbling and moving."

The Amba family is "thrilled" to be chosen as a Habitat for Humanity home owner.
