Gympie Surrounds recorded the highest median household income in 2021 at $1292 a week; a $225 jump since the 2016 Census.

This was closely followed by Gympie South, which recorded the second highest median household income at $1245 a week; a $184 jump since the 2016 census.

Kilkivan recorded the highest increase across the region but the third highest income at $1088 a week; a $230 increase since 2016.

Gympie North recorded the fourth highest increase at $1082 a week; a $165 increase since 2016.

Cooloola recorded the lowest increase across the region at $790 a week. There was no data available from the 2016 Census.

Highest median personal incomes

A median personal income is the exact middle figure of all recorded household incomes across the region. This means one half of the population from each area will be earning more, and one half will be earning less.

Despite Gympie Surrounds recording the highest median household income across the region, Gympie South recorded the highest median personal weekly income at $608 a week.

This was an $86 increase since the 2016 Census.

Gympie Surrounds recorded the second highest median personal income at $578 a week; a $91 jump since the 2016 Census.

Gympie North recorded the third highest median personal income at $572 a week; a $78 jump since 2016.

Cooloola recorded the lowest increase in personal income at $461 a week. There was no data from the 2016 census available to compare.

It comes as new data from the Census revealed the Gympie region population has grown by 5.5 per cent since 2016, from 50,327 people to 53,242 people in five years.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said he thought the region had a “great balance” of new residents.

“Clearly we’ve had an influx of people from Victoria and New South Wales and the southern states who were looking for a great place to live,” he said.

“I also think we’ve had a considerable number of families and small businesses that have come to the region as well.”

The mayor believed Southside was considered the epicentre for residential growth.

However, he believed the whole region would likely continue to grow at a fast rate.
