Gympie’s Guzman y Gomez opening date delayed

New details have emerged on when Gympie residents will get their first taste of Guzman Y Gomez from city’s new outlet, how many jobs it will create, and where they can apply.

GYG Gympie was originally expected to open in February 2024, but construction is still underway two months after this date.

Gympie residents keen to take out their first orders of Guzman Y Gomez can expect to do so by mid-year, a spokeswoman has revealed.

The eagerly anticipated restaurant chain originally announced plans to open a franchise in Gympie by February 2024.

But anybody who drops by the site now would see tradies instead of customers, all with tools in hand instead of burritos.

The spokeswoman said Friday the opening date has been pushed back to mid 2024, but declined to comment further on the reasons for the delay.

“There’s nothing team GYG love doing more than opening new restaurant,” the spokeswoman said.

In December 2023 the construction company working on four GYG outlets across the state, including the one at Gympie, went into liquidation.

This has not stopped progress on the outlet though.

The outlet’s well-known large yellow GYG sign has now been erected at the site as work continues on the outlet which the spokeswoman said would create “an additional 100 jobs”.

The wait is almost over for GYG Gympie.

These can be found at the Guzman Y Gomez page.

There is one position advertised at time of publication, for a full-time restaurant manager.

Facebook users have expressed concern over the store’s location by a busy intersection on the corner of the Bruce Hwy and Excelsior Rd.

“The new GYG in Gympie will feature a dual lane drive thru giving the local community more convenience”, the spokeswoman said.

She said the minds behind GYG hope to show that “fast food doesn’t have to be bad food”.
