IT has been a long time between drinks for the Gympie veterans women's hockey side contesting state titles, but this weekend the girls will put their bodies on the line for a tilt at the shield in Buderim.
The resurgence of women's hockey in Gympie has been the catalyst behind a push to enter the team in the elite competition.
The Gympie side has been training hard over the past couple of months pushing their bodies to the limit to improve their fitness and team work for the event.
Forty-nine teams from all over Queensland are converging on the Sunshine Coast.
Team spokesperson Debbie Mackay said it had been over eight years since Gympie had entered a team in the titles.
“Women's hockey is starting to build again in Gympie thanks to the work of people like Amanda Millard, and this is the next step. Hopefully next year we will be able to send a senior women's team away as well,” Mackay said.
“It will be a big ask for the girls to win because we have a lot of people in the team who are new to hockey and will be contesting their first state titles, but we hope to have a good time,” she said.
The girls will play their first game at 7.45am tomorrow.
“It's an early start, but because of the number of teams they need to get games going early to fit them all in over the three days,” Mackay said.
