Gympie to host hockey state championships in July

The championships will be held at the Gympie Hockey Association Grounds on Power Rd from July 4-7, where 29 teams will compete across three divisions with the chance to compete in the Australian Championships in Tasmania.

Gympie will host an influx of visitors from Sunday, July 4 to Wednesday, July 7, as the Gympie District and Hockey Association holds the Under 13 Girls State Hockey Championships.

The championships will be held at the Gympie Hockey Association Grounds on Power Rd, where 29 teams will compete across three divisions throughout the course of the championships.

Gympie and District Hockey Association will compete against one team in division one, with the finals of the tournament to begin early on the Wednesday.

At the end of the event, Queensland state teams will be selected to compete in the Australian Championships in Hobart, Tasmania, from September 30 to October 6.

Gympie and District Hockey Association president Brian Parker said the association was proud to host the event.

“My favourite part of the game is the opportunity to play, and GDHA is proud to host this event and give this opportunity to so many talented juniors,” he said.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said he wanted to welcome everyone involved in the tournament to the region.

“Our region has had the honour of hosting several hockey state championships over recent years, and I am thrilled that we were chosen to stage another event at our amazing hockey facility in 2021,” he said.

“Hockey is a huge part of the sporting fabric in our community, and I believe that showcasing the best young talent Queensland has to offer will inspire the next crop of Gympie juniors to pick up a stick and try it for themselves.

“Finally, to all of the players competing in this year’s state championship, I wish you all the best and I hope you enjoy your stay in our beautiful part of the world.”
