At least six schools across the Gympie region have reportedly alerted parents to Covid cases within their classrooms, as the first week of the 2022 school year comes to an end.
It comes as Queensland recorded 280 Covid positive children aged between five and 11-years-old via PCR test on Thursday, bringing the total number of Queensland school-aged children with Covid to 1149.
Parents across the Gympie region have leaked copies of letters and emails alerting them of positive cases within their schools online, to warn other parents when there is a known Covid case within their school.
Originally, only parents of affected classes were notified.
Gympie West State School Principal Alana Scott reportedly sent home three letters this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The first letter, sighted by the Gympie Times, was about a case in Year 6, the second about a case in Year 4 and the third about a case in Year 5.
In the letters, Ms Scott reminded parents to monitor themselves and their families for any symptoms of Covid, and to stay home and get a rapid antigen test should they develop any symptoms.
“If students become symptomatic while at school, you will be contacted to collect them,” she wrote.
“You will also be provided with a free rapid antigen test (RAT) to administer at home.”
Victory Heights Primary School reportedly sent two emails to parents of Year 5 students this week, as well as one email to parents of Year 2 students.
Copies of these emails were not shared online.
Cooloola Christian College notified parents of both primary and high school students a positive case was detected within the school both last week and this week, though it was not specified which day these alerts were sent out.
The affected class was not specified in the alerts either.
“Please be assured, reflecting Queensland Health guidelines, our Covid safe Management Plan continues to be enacted,” the notification read.
“Under current Queensland Health guidelines there are no identified close contacts and all procedures have been followed to date.
“We recommend that all children and families continue to monitor for symptoms and seek a testing facility if necessary.”
Gympie South State School reportedly had one Year 6 student with a positive case on Monday (February 7) who was collected after spending half the day at school, and tested positive that same day.
However, it’s understood the school only alerted parents to the positive case three days later on Thursday.
It’s also understood Gympie High alerted parents to a positive case within the school on Thursday, though the affected class was not specified.
One Mile State School also sent a letter home to parents of Year 5 students on Thursday.
There are 1,427 Covid cases in the Gympie region as of Saturday, February 12.
