Plans for a million-dollar make over for the Gympie region’s only Hungry Jack’s have been revealed, including a proposal to remove the famous playground area.
The restaurant, which has been closed since February, is currently undergoing repairs and refurbishments after it was impacted by the record-breaking February flood.
Now, the Gympie Times can reveal plans for how the building will look once it reopens.
According to development application documents lodged with Gympie Regional Council, a number of big changes will be coming to the restaurant, including the removal of the Playland to make way for more outdoor seating.
Outside, the restaurant will receive new, operable louvres around the perimeter of the outdoor dining area as well as new signage and an updated design.
Inside, the restaurant will introduce three new electronic kiosks, similar to the ones seen in fast food rival McDonald’s, as well as all-new furniture and an additional urinal to the male bathrooms.
An extra four seats will also be added to the dining room, as well as an updated party room.
The front of the restaurant, which faces the Bruce Highway, will be decorated with a new illuminated Hungry Jack’s sign and new, operable louvres around the outdoor dining room.
Meanwhile, on the northwest facing side of the restaurant where the drive-through is, the building will have a graphic plastered on the wall between windows one and two and an added illuminated whopper graphic.
The Hungry Jack’s illuminated letterhead will also be moved higher, on top of the roof instead of alongside it.
On the opposite side, facing southeast, the building will receive a new illuminated bun logo above the entrance door, and a giant graphic on the left hand side of the entrance.
The Gympie Times spoke with project manager Matt Skerrett in April, who said the building was tipped to reopen sometime in May.
However, with the application for the upgrades yet to be approved by council, it could be a bit longer before Gympie residents can indulge in a whopper.
The upgrades come as a development application for a new fast food outlet on the Bruce Hwy was lodged with council in April.
The proposed development will replace a number of small hospitality businesses beside the Gympie McDonald’s.
It is yet to be announced which fast food outlet will take over.
