Rod Venn, also known to his fellow athletes as the “The Red V”, is a beloved character who has his fingers in multiple pies.
Mr Venn has lived in Gympie just short of 15 years; he originally transferred from Eidsvold in the North Burnett region.
He has been the President of the Gympie Regional Cricket Association for five years, spanning the five seasons.
The facilities down at One Mile were all upgraded and renovated under Mr Venn’s leadership; he secured two new wickets for the club, new lighting and general amenities.
Mr Venn also helped organise several carnivals hosted by the GRCA.
“I’m really pleased we were able to advance our facilities through a couple of grants, through state and council,” he said.
Mr Venn had his transfer confirmed and formalised in mid-November which he requested himself after working at the Gympie station for almost 15 years.
“I’ve considered moving south to assist for my elderly parents, and I think the change in workspace will revitalise my career,” he said.
Mr Venn says he doesn’t see himself staying away for too long.
“I’ll be back in no time. If they’re down a player hopefully I’ll be able to fill in for them,” he said.
The GRCA committee held a meeting on January 4th to elect a new president until May 2022.
An electronic ballot was held resulting in Danny Shepperson being elected as the new President.
