Gympie council approves $35.4m repair package for flooded roads

Repairs are finally slated to begin on more than 100 of the region’s flood-wrecked roads one year after the disaster, at a cost of $20m more than expected. See the list of roads.

More than 100 flood damaged roads across the Gympie region will be getting fixed as part of a staggering $35.4m recovery package approved by Gympie Regional Council, with almost all of the funding expected to come from the state's Recovery Authority.

Repairs are on the horizon for more than 120 Gympie roads a year after they were ruined by floodwaters, at a cost of $35.4m.

Gympie Regional Councillors have backed a recovery package to finally start fixing roads following the trio of floods in January, February and May of 2022.

The contract, which was awarded to Durack Civil Pty Ltd, came in almost $21m higher than the council’s procurement panel’s estimated cost of $14.4m.

The figure was based on “historical prices prior to the market becoming overheated”, the staff report tabled at the meeting said.

Infrastructure director Graham O’Byrne said the tender evaluation panel had suggested the council go back to market with the tender, but the Queensland Recovery Authority – who is almost entirely footing the bill – accepted the price was “the current market rate”.

The only other tender received by the council, from SGQ Pty Ltd, came in at $36.5m.

That same authority had been the reason behind the lengthy delay in repair work starting.

Mr O’Byrne said the QRA had made some changes as the funding historically “was used by councils with not as much scrutiny”.

“The process has involved thousands and thousands of elements of data … including photographs, survey works, and pinpointing locations of damage,” he said.

This included proving the damage was done by floodwaters.

He said work was expected to start on the roads within the next six weeks.

The QRA has not yet approved the funding, but Mr O’Byrne said securing it would not be a major hiccup for the council.

The roads being repaired as part of the $35m package are predominantly on the Gympie region's eastern side.
