Gympie, Bundaberg, Fraser Coast road closures, power cuts| List

Receding flood waters have exposed the staggering extent of damage to key routes and in out of the Wide Bay. FULL LIST OF DELAYS, CLOSURES.

Major flooding near Childers

The Granville Bridge was expected to open on Tuesday night after a mammoth clean up effort.

Receding floodwaters had exposed a sinkhole the size of a car on the Kent St side and wall of debris against the bridge which was also hit by a pontoon, sparking safety fears.

The Fraser Coast council advised on Tuesday afternoon temporary barriers would be used to replace the damaged handrail along the pedestrian walkway.

Temporary lights will also be installed.

Access to Granville from Maryborough will be via Alice, Guava and Kent streets.

As of 6pm council staff were clearing the last of the debris and Department of Transport of Main Roads and Transport had inspected the site to allow all vehicles to use the bridge.

Broken gas lines and a sink hole the size of a small car had stood in the way of thousands of Granville residents being able to easily access Maryborough.
Fraser Coast Regional Mayor George Seymour said council workers were scrambling to fix the damage to the Granville bridge after it was struck by a pontoon.
“That has caused structural damage to the railings,’’ Cr Seymour told the Fraser Coast Chronicle on Tuesday afternoon.
There’s also gas in the water following damage to gas pipes.

“A sink hole has opened up on the Maryborough side,’’ he said.
“It’s the size of a small car.’’
Cr Seymour said he had hoped the bridge would be operational on Tuesday but at the time believed it was likely to be Wednesday.
While there had been reports earlier about structural damage to the bridge, Cr Seymour said the bridge itself appeared to be okay.
The damage to the railings, however, meant, that access for pedestrians and bicycles was not possible.
“We have cleaned the bridge.’’

A crane had been brought in to remove the pontoon that had hit the bridge during Maryborough’s huge flood event.
Paramedics and Queensland Health staff were deployed on the weekend to a temporary set up on the hockey oval at Granville to deal with emergencies.
Cr Seymour said Granville residents could access Maryborough via the road to Gympie and the Bruce Highway but it was not ideal being a huge round trip, compared to a short trip via the bridge.
Granville is just a couple of kilometres from Maryborough when the bridge is operational.

Meanwhile, the Lamington Bridge was expected to open tomorrow (Wednesday, January 12).

Council was waiting on the flood water to recede to allow full access for the debris to be removed and a safety inspection undertaken.

The bridge over the Mary River at Tiaro was also still closed.

Several other roads across the Wide Bay remain closed or subject to limited access in the wake of unprecedented flooding over the weekend.

Significant delays north on the Bruce Hwy, which was torn apart between Curra and Tiaro and to towns west of Gympie, are expected to continue.

Maryborough MP and Assistant Roads Minister Bruce Saunders urged drivers to avoid the highway unless absolutely necessary.

He said TMR had done an “amazing job” thus far in opening the Bruce Highway into Maryborough to traffic, despite lengthy delays.

However, he said there was no time frame for when motorists could expect damaged roads to be repaired.

“When things dry out properly and TMR can get to it, the roads can be fixed,” he said.

“At this time, they’re out and about and doing as much as they possibly could with what’s happened.

“People have got to realise that, they’ve got to have a bit of patience.”

The Burnett River Bridge at South Kolan in the Bundaberg Region remains closed.

West of Gympie, the Burnett Highway between Booubyjan and Goomeri remains closed after sections of the road were obliterated.

However, there are no issues for motorists trying to get into Gympie from southern regions via the Bruce Highway.
