Heavy rain kept big crowds away but the Gympie Show went ahead on Friday.

The Show Society decided to continue given the mammoth effort to organise it and for the businesses which had already set up.

Sideshow Alley was in full swing by 11am and rides which could operate in the wet weather fired up.

“We’ll get as many rides going as possible and have a bit of fun down at the show,” ride operator Jackson Crank told the Gympie Times

“The people will wait until the rain drops off. It it doesn’t, they’ll just come anyway. They’ll put their gumboots and raincoat on and they’ll be here.”

People of all ages made their way to the grounds in the rain to support the community’s efforts

“I know they had a really rough time in the other floods, so I just wanted to show my support,” Taya Bennett-Treeby said

The Gympie Show officially got underway on Thursday despite months of floods and Covid mandates uncertainty.

Machinery Alley and the Pavilion were full with the Tractor Pull and Pig Races attracting the most attention.

Many stallholders and competitors were cut off by the recent weather closures in other regions.

All horse events were completely cancelled for the safety of patrons as were several school excursions.

“Us as an organisation, the Gympie Show Society, the committee decided we needed to put the show on as a boost for our region,” said Deb Brown, Gympie Show Society President.

The judging events were pushed through Wednesday and Thursday, in fear of rain ruining the event.

“It’s all accredited to the committee what they did here, and got all the cattle judged today and people can go home before the events of this evening,” said Ross Warren, stud cattle judge.

Isabella Lindlay from Hazelton Brahmans swept up the stud cattle competition with her 14 month old bull. She left the Gympie show with the Junior Male and Champion of Champions titles under her belt.

Donna Theresa also from Hazelton Brahmans won the Champions of the Opposite Sex category.

On Friday, Avonlea Goldchip Connie from the Paulger family went home as Supreme Champion of the Dairy Cattle event.

From the arts and craft corner, Hannah Johnston, 18, dominated the floral art section. She has been doing floral art for almost 10 years.

She claimed first place in all six categories she entered. Her Lemon Twist entry won her the Grand Prize and she strongly encouraged juniors and the Gympie community to have a go at floral art.
