Two Gundiah cattle graziers are looking for the owners of five cattle swept away in the raging torrent of the early January floods and finding land again on their property.

Suzanne McCowen and her husband Marc found the cattle while driving around checking fence damage on the weekend of January 8-9, 2021.

“We have found five in total, at this stage we’re just coming across them. We are busy repairing fences still,” Mrs McCowen said.

The property received more than 400mm of rain on Thursday, January 6.

When Mrs McGowan came across the cattle, she said they were a little stirred up but did not appear sick or hungry.

She is still looking for the rightful owners of the Droughtmaster and has vowed to look after them until those owners are found.

“If other people found any of our cattle, I would hope they would be kept safe until we could pick them up,” she said.

Mrs McCowen is yet to find out if she has lost any cattle herself.

“We won’t know if we have lost any cattle ourselves until we can run them through the yards and give them a good count.”

While she is concerned about the cattle, she acknowledged their luck of having a high area of country the stock could access.

“I truly feel for everyone who has been personally impacted. The river rose so fast and so fiercely, many people and lots of stock were caught completely by surprise,” she said.

Mrs McCowen published a post in a local community page on Facebook asking if the cattle belonged to anyone.

“They’re safe here for as long as needed,” she said. “I like knowing we’re keeping them safe.”

She also wrote a warning to any potential cow thieves, explaining proof of ownership would be required upon pick-up.

“I know it (cattle theft) is occurring in the area”, she said.
