Fishermen risk fall for good catch

THE iconic Bullock Point Jetty may be dilapidated and falling down but it isn't stopping keen anglers risking all for a good catch of fish.

THE iconic Bullock Point Jetty may be dilapidated and falling down but it isn’t stopping keen anglers risking all for a good catch of fish.

Fisherman of all ages are still scaling the old wooden jetty to access deeper water in Tin Can Bay inlet despite authorities attempts to fence off the structure.

Gympie Regional Mayor Ron Dyne said fishermen needed to pay attention to the signs and desist from using the jetty.

He said the structure was unsafe and for the welfare and safety of people, they should stay off it.

Council did have some initial plans to demolish the historic structure, but is now revisiting the decision.

Cr Dyne said plenty of people thought it would be better to knock the jetty down but there were also plenty of people who thought the jetty should be saved.

The Mayor said he, Cr Graham Engeman and a couple of other people were looking at how much money it would cost to refurbish the jetty.

“If the refurbishment costs aren’t too high we may be able to save the jetty but if it is not cost effective, there is very little the council can do,” Cr Dyne said.

“We are investigating all of the options.

“If it is going to cost squillions it is very hard to justify.

“We will solidify in our mind what the best decision is,” he said.
