AN electrical fire thought to be sparked by yesterday afternoon’s thunderstorm resulted in the evacuation of the Gympie RSL Club.
Gympie Fire and Rescue personel evacuated the Gympie RSL Club yesterday afternoon after a minor electrical fire.
Two Gympie Fire and Rescue trucks, along with two ambulances, blocked Mary Street at about 4.45pm after Christmas shoppers saw smoke coming from the top floor of the building.
Fire and Rescue personnel evacuated reluctant pokie-playing patrons and staff while extinguishing the small fire.
They then cut electricity to the building, taped off the main street footpath and started to make sure it was safe to return to the RSL building.
Investigations into the fire are still continuing, but it is thought wet electrical cables near the construction site of the new club renovation may have been the cause of the fire.
A passer-by said he saw the smoke coming from the vicinity of electricity cables on the outside of the building.
No one was hurt in the incident.
