Fire crews on scene for mulch pile fire at Gympie dump site

A large plume of smoke rose over the Gympie sky on Thursday morning as fire crews battled a large fire at the Bonnick Road dump. Residents have been warned to keep their windows closed.

A large mulch pile at the Bonnick Rd dump in Gympie caught on fire overnight on Wednesday night.

Two fire crews were called to the scene at 2.06am on Thursday and were still working alongside Gympie Regional Council workers at 9am to subdue the smoke and flames.

The mulch pile measured 20m x 5m, a QFES spokesperson said.

Fireys used an excavator and loader to split the pile to manage the fire.

The cause of the fire was unknown, the spokesperson said.

The fire produced large volumes of smoke and affected residents were advised to close their doors and windows.
