GYMPIE State High school held the first ever Ecoman course for business-oriented students in Gympie last week.

GYMPIE State High school held the first ever Ecoman course for business-oriented students in Gympie last week.

The name Ecoman comes from a combination of economics and management and the three-day course simulated the operation of a medium sized business over a period of four financial years.

It is designed to fuel the future business aspirations in students.

The program originated in Switzerland and is currently running in hundreds of European schools, but this was a first for Gympie students.

Students were broken up into three groups (companies) and made decisions about the demand for their product, production outputs, sales, marketing, environmental impacts, training, employees, budget management, income, expenditure and much more.

All this took place against an economic scenario for each year of the company’s operations and at the end of the program students reported to shareholders on their company’s success.

The course is costly and Gympie State High school is hoping sponsors will come on board next year to allow the course to be run again.
