A CROSS bred dingo that has been hanging around the Gympie hockey fields on the Southside has evaded traps left by a council contractor.
Gympie hockey association president Ian Wenzel said numerous hockey volunteers had seen the dingo-like dog hanging around bushland skirting the club's bottom fields.
“The dingo has been seen mainly in the early morning and in the late afternoon and is very wary of people,” Mr Wenzel said.
He said neighbours behind the hockey fields had also seen the animal and heard howling late at night.
The sighting of the dingo follows the sighting of another dingo at the Willow Grove Estate on the Southside last month.
Gympie Mayor Ron Dyne says his staff doesn't think the two dogs are one and the same.
“We have had reports of wild dog activity in the area and complaints about dingoes howling in the night,” Cr Dyne said.
“Council staff have seen at least one dog near the hockey fields.
“Council officer Mike Webb saw a dingo at Gympie hockey fields on a number of occasions while looking through binoculars.”
Cr Dyne said the dog looks to be cross bred with a dingo because of its size (it's larger than a normal dingo).
Council enlisted the services of a qualified dingo trapper to try and catch the animal.
He set up traps on the council reserve surrounding the hockey fields near tracks the dog had been using to navigate the bushland.
The traps were in place for three nights, but the dingo evaded capture.
Cr Dyne said the Gympie Regional Council had now suspended the operation until further notice.
“We will review the situation over the next couple of weeks,” he said.
