Rest areas, pedestrian crossings and a shared pedestrian and bike bridge over the Mary River north west of Normanby Bridge are part of a plan released by the Transport Department to improve connectivity between Southside and Gympie.
The proposed active transport crossing is designed to provide a safer journey for pedestrians and bike riders, as well as completing a missing link on the Principal Cycle Network at this location, a statement released by the Department of Transport and Main Roads on Tuesday said.
This designed detailed work for the project has been undertaken with $1.3 million funding under the Active Transport Investment Program.

“At this stage we are completing design only, which will be used to prioritise future construction funding,” the statement said.
DTMR Southern Queensland Regional Director Bill Lansbury said feedback received in late 2021 showed support for footbridge parallel to Normanby Bridge and has been used to inform the design.
“Since our community consultation, detailed design has progressed and it‘s exciting to release the concept layout to the community. These crossings will encourage the community to get active and may even reduce the number of cars on the road which is a win for motorists and the environment.”
