Crime scene declared after ‘suspicious’ Gympie unit fire
Police have declared a crime scene after a suspicious fire gutted a Gympie unit overnight, leaving the home completely destroyed.
Police are investigating a suspicious fire that destroyed a unit near Gympie State High School overnight, leaving the home charred and gutted.
Multiple fire and rescue crews rushed to reports of a fire in a single story detached unit complex on Cootharaba Road, near the intersection of Batchelor Road, around 6pm on Wednesday.
When emergency crews arrived on scene, the building was “well alight”, with smoke reportedly issuing from the windows.
Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within half an hour, and contained it to the one structure, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring units.
No occupants were reportedly in the building at the time, and no patients were treated on scene or taken to hospital by paramedics.
The fire appeared to have completely gutted the inside of the home, with walls and furniture inside the building charred and destroyed.
By Thursday morning, the structure had been cordoned off with police tape and two officers were on scene.
A spokeswoman from the Queensland Police Service confirmed that a crime scene had been declared and police were treating the incident as suspicious.
