A SUBARU stuck on the Mudlo Rocks at Rainbow Beach and abandoned by its driver, has been removed by the Gympie Regional Council.

Rainbow Beach residents had been concerned about the environmental impact of the wreck if its oil and fuel were released on to the beach.

At first, council and the department of environment and resource management could not work out who was responsible for the wreck's removal because of a grey area determining who controlled the coastline.

But the council has come to the rescue of the beach and paid for it to be removed.

Chief executive officer Ken Mason said Gympie Mayor Ron Dyne had organised the car's removal at a cost of about $800.

“He was concerned about the environmental impact if the oil and fuel had got on to the beach,” Mr Mason said.

“We decided to get it off the beach and look after the environment and then argue over whose responsibility it is after that,” he said.

The Mudlo Rocks is infamous for catching inexperienced drivers and trapping them in the incoming tide.

On page 18 and 19 of The Gympie Times today beach expert Robbie Rye tells you how to navigate the rocks in your four-wheel-drive.
