Thirteen months later, Mrs Johnson’s life has turned around and she’s dropped almost 30 kgs. Her husband is once again active and barely feels pain in his back.

“For the first time as a family, we went out into the ocean and we went paddleboarding. It was the first time my husband was able to do that since his surgery, and I was able to keep up with him and my son.” she said.

“It’s little moments like this that are so normal for everybody else. It’s just such a huge achievement for me personally because I feel fit and well enough.”

Her son has given her the title of “weight spotter” for his weight training, and under his encouragement, she sometimes tries lifting weights as well.

Mrs and Mr Johnson met as teenagers in their home town of Devon, England.

When they got the chance to travel around Australia in a campervan 12 years ago, they fell in love with the Mary Valley and eventually bought the property they now call home.

It was in Kandanga where Mrs Johnson got the chance to follow her passion and started Hot Tree, a book editing business.

She is now an established author and runs Tangled Tree Publishing, alongside her original editing business.

She recognises keeping healthy eating habits is a “battle.”

“Keep at it. It’s as simple as that. It’s a journey and there’s no end to that journey. Keep going,” she advised.
