Video has emerged of the terrifying moments a heavily laden cement truck veered out of control down a Bruce Hwy overpass on the southern outskirts of Gympie and crashed through guard rails, seriously injuring and trapping the driver.
The footage was captured by what appears to be a traffic camera above the intersection of the highway and the Hughes Terrace overpass and shows the moment the truck lost control and started to look like it was going to tip over last Friday morning, October 6.
Multiple emergency crews were called to the scene following the crash, which happened about 9.30am.
The low quality, 18-second clip shows the seconds before the Mansell cement truck careened into frame from the eastern side of the highway.
It skids along the length of the overpass before smashing through guardrails and a lamppost bordering the off-ramp, tipping onto its side and sliding to a rest in the middle of the intersection amid a cloud of dust and cement.
The clip was posted online by a little-known YouTube Channel PopVidz, which has two subscribers.
The only other videos on the page are of Ukraine-Russia war from six months ago, a clip from the Hamas terrorist attack at Israel on Sunday, and short videos of rockets being fired into Israel from the Gaza.
Firefighters worked for more than 30 minutes to free the driver, who was aged in his 40s and suffered head, abdominal, pelvic and leg injuries in the crash.
He was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition.
The off-ramp was blocked to traffic for more than two hours, causing traffic along the highway to back up for kilometres, and forcing Mary Valley traffic to cross the Mary River via Kidd Bridge.
The driver was transported to the nearby helicopter after it landed on the Mary Valley Highway near Attie Sullivan Park.
