The five-day hunt for the beloved pet of a Gympie couple run down in an alleged murder attempt has had a happy ending.

Red kelpie cattle cross Chopper was being walked by her owners Carla and Brett Benson on Sorensen Rd on the night of Monday, May 22, when the trio was allegedly driven into by another local resident.

Two-year-old Chopper bolted and was feared injured or dead.

A critically injured Mrs Benson was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where she remains in a stable condition, and Mr Benson was taken to hospital with a broken leg.

Friends, family and the community launched a week long search for microchipped, two-year-old Chopper after her owners, Carla and Brett Benson (pictured), were injured in an alleged murder attempt on Monday, May 22, and Chopper disappeared.

Plans were underway among some residents for a co-ordinated search on Saturday, but this was called off amid concerns it might spook the dog further.

On Monday, the Benson’s niece Karissa confirmed on social media Chopper had been found alive and well. The news was met with an outpouring of relief and celebration.

“It’s amazing to see how a community like this works together in times of need,” Ms Benson said in her post.

“We’re so grateful for everyone who has supported (sic).”

A GoFundMe campaign launched by Karissa to help with the family’s costs has so far raised more than $4500.
