THE gutted skeleton of a car that burst into flames after hitting a tree at Veteran this morning will be investigated by police.
The driver appears to have fled from the station wagon, which was mangled into a tree on Enterprise Rd and completely engulfed by flames when fire-fighters arrived at the scene just before 6am.
Two fire crews extinguished the fire within minutes, a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said, leaving a smoking-hot mess for fire-fighters to monitor until just after 7am.
Gympie police officers searched the area but no driver was found, Gympie police Sergeant Kylie McLellan said.
She said not much was known about the vehicle at this stage as there were no number plates on the vehcile and engine bay was too hot to access to retrieve a VIN number.
"It seems more likely that the fire was a result of the impact and not deliberately started,” Sgt McLellan said.
The charred wreckage remains cordoned off on Enterprise Rd for further investigation.
