BUSINESS is booming at Rainbow Beach these school holidays with local business people saying it is the best September school holidays in years.

A combination of great weather and the sand returning to coast has seen the numbers of tourists swell.

The last few years have seen Rainbow Beach dogged by bad weather over the school holidays, but this week has been near perfect.

Ruth Modin, of Rainbow Beach Foodworks, was busy serving the multitude of customers yesterday and said “people had found Rainbow Beach again.”

“It's busy, very, very busy. We had a good crowd on weekend,” Mrs Modin said.

“There are lots of happy people around.”

She said this year's holidays were a lot busier than last year and it looked like the town was going to stay busy.

Sam Mitchell, from Rainbow Beach Tourism, echoed Mrs Modin's sentiments.

“It's the best holiday season for a long while,” he said.

“The beach is good, although you can still only get to Double Island Point at low tide, and the weather has been fantastic.

“There are plenty of holiday makers and they all seem happy.”

Rainbow Beach lifeguards Lleam Rees and James Cahill have had their hands full this week keeping an eye on the crowds hitting the beach.

Mr Rees said there had been plenty of tourists making the most of the perfect conditions, but he warned swimmers should always be careful and swim between the flags.

He said the extra sand built up on the beach could become unstable under water and warned swimmers to be on the look out for flash rips.

“Parents need to keep an eye on children and keep them close to shore,' he said.

He also warned swimmers to beware of dumping waves on the incoming tide that can knock people off their feet.

The beach is patrolled from 8am-5pm week days, 8.30am- 5pm Saturday and 7.30pm to 4.30pm Sunday.
