A viral video of Derek Murray from AAA Repairs and Electric doing a roadworthy on a car, kickstarted nominations in the search to find Gympie’s best mechanic in 2024.
Comments and shares flowed, with 23 mechanics nominated throughout the Gympie region.
The competition was fierce and showcased the incredible standard of mechanical care and love the region has for their vehicles, whether they be hobby rides, essential work vehicles, kid-carriers, zippy small cars, or bush bashing adventure wagons.
Here are the top five mechanics as voted by our subscribers.

Brad Weller – Gympie Central Service Centre
Brad Weller is a true local who grew up in Gympie, did a short stint at the Sunshine Coast where he started out as a mechanic, and then moved back home to run Gympie Central Service Centre with this brother Peter Weller.
A man of few words, but knowledge reaching far beyond, Brad has been servicing Gympie cars for the last 20 years.
He said he was not sure what his formula for success is, but whatever he is doing, he must be doing right thanks to the great team he has behind him.
“Thank you so much for your support, hopefully we’ll be here for another 20 years,” he said.
Congratulations to the team at Gympie Central Service Centre: Brad and Peter Weller, Tyrone Wells, Tim Brady and Anne Waugh.
Mr Weller was voted Gympie’s top mechanic with 22 per cent of votes.
Clint Laycock – Gympie Mechanical Repairs
Clint Laycock came in second with 17 per cent of the votes.
Tyson King – Paul King Auto Repairs
Tyson King came third with 11 per cent of the votes.
Paul Vella – Velmec Automotive
Paul Vella came in fourth place with 8 per cent of the votes.
Phil – Doyles Garage
Phil placed fifth with 7 per cent of the votes.
