Flood watch issued on the Mary River, which is still in a state of minor flooding

A new flood watch has been issued on the saturated catchment of the Mary River, and on catchments between Rockhampton and Caboolture, with up to 100mm of rain expected to fall over the next two days.

Showers and areas of rainfall are forecast across the Gympie region from Friday, with the BoM predicting up to 80mm of rainfall on Friday and Saturday, and up to 50mm on Saturday alone.

The Bureau has issued a flood watch on the already flooded Mary River and on still saturated catchments between Rockhampton and Caboolture.

The heaviest rainfall is expected along coastal parts.

The Bom website said minor flooding was possible for the flood watch area, which may affect low lying areas near rivers and creeks.

The Bom website said there was a 100 per cent chance of showers on Friday , mainly during the afternoon and evening.

The website also forecasted 100 per cent chance of showers for Saturday, and that the rain should ease on Sunday.

Higgins Storm Chasing published a weather update on Wednesday, predicting up to 100mm of rain between Brisbane and Mackay, with the heaviest falls on Friday and Saturday, especially in Wide Bay.

The Mary River was on Wednesday 3.51m below minor flood levels and falling.

The Bureau was not expecting the river to rise above the 6m minor flood level with the incoming event, but the region could be in for localised flooding of creeks and roads.

Last week’s flood scenario is not expected to be repeated, BoM meteorologist Helen Kirkup said.

She advised the public to keep watch on updated weather warnings.

Gympie CBD businesses were devastated in the February flood where the Mary River reached almost 23m, and 11 had to pick up their mops again in May.

Multiple Mary Street businesses have remained closed since February, and walking up the lower half of Mary Street reveals some extent of the impact these weather events have had on this community.
