As one of three candidates nominated for Division 5, former retail manager Allona Lahn said she was ready to bring “a little bit of sparkle, fresh and new outlook to Gympie”.

Ms Lahn moved from Mooloolaba to her 91 acre (37ha) farm at Mother Mountain three years ago and said she “absolutely loves it here”.

In her time tending to the farm and homeschooling her 10-year-old she said she has become part of the community, revitalising the Mother Mt community hall with fresh produce markets.

She said she wants to run for council because she “can see a lot of opportunities in Gympie that aren’t being utilised to their full potential”.

Coming from a “varied” background managing wholesale companies, retail shops and hotels, she said that if elected to the council she would “advocate for activities for children”.

“My passion would be our future, which is our children.”

Ms Lahn ran a small business on the Mooloolaba Esplanade before moving to Gympie.and sees the experience gained there as something she could offer to the Mary St, which she said “need a bit of a morale boost”.

While she said rates and potholes were a necessary issue, morale was low in Gympie, with a lot of uncertainty about the future.

“So having somebody with some clear leadership or clear direction for the town, would boost the morale of the town,” she said.

As a yoga practitioner she said she could see more natural health benefits being a way to ease the burden on the Gympie Hospital.

“It could create more opportunities for people to heal naturally,” she said.

“I think I would bring to Gympie a little bit of excitement, a little bit of sparkle, and fresh, new outlook.”
