At its February Ordinary Meeting, Gympie Regional Council awarded the tender to deliver the project, which is being jointly funded by the council and the Queensland Reconstruction Authority following the February 2022 floods.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said awarding the tender was the final step toward restoring this much-loved community asset, which was impacted by the highest flood in living memory.

“The Albert Park Grandstand has been a part of Gympie’s sporting history for over 80 years,” Mr Hartwig said.

“The iconic facility is used regularly by local and visiting sporting clubs and schools, and these significant works will ensure they can return to using the facility safely.

“The flood recovery works will include essential structural upgrades, replacing the external staircases, front balustrade, as well as renovations to the canteen, transforming it into a meeting space.

“Other improvements will address flood-related damage, including sediment removal, and repairs to the path, flooring, internal gutters, and bathroom, air conditioning upgrades, and repairs to the grandstand’s timber seating and flooring.

“This has been a long-awaited project for our community, and I want to thank the QRA for the funding support that has made it possible.”

Construction is expected to commence in April 2025, with completion estimated for September 2025, weather permitting.

Council will notify nearby residents and affected sporting clubs about the project before work on the grandstand begins.
