Drivers are being warned of temporary road closures around Gympie Connection Rd as progress on the $1 billion bypass powers towards completion in 2024.

Work on the new interchange, northeast of the city, is expected to finish between Saturday, January 13 and Thursday, January 18.

It will include building two 130m dual-lane bridges that will span the Connection Rd, requiring improvements to the road at Victory Heights.

The work will be done in two stages.

The first will require the closure of Gympie Connection Rd, Ascot Rd and Old Goomboorian Rd from 4.30pm on January 13 to 6pm on January 14.

Drivers are advised to use other routes, and residents of Old Goomboorian Rd will be detoured along Old Veteran and Sandy Creek Rds.

Drivers are again being urged to use alternate routes until the work finishes on January 18.

Residents will still be able to access properties during this work, but Transport and Main Roads said they may notice an increase in heavy vehicles and machinery.

Wide Bay LNP MP Llew O’Brien said in a media release announcing the road closures the four-lane, 26km Bypass was expected to open in late 2024.

“More than 11,000 vehicles travel on this part of the Bruce Highway every day and when completed, the Gympie Bypass will eliminate eight sets of traffic lights and deliver four lanes along this new corridor to support the safe and efficient movement of cars and trucks, even when the Mary River floods,” Mr O’Brien said.
