Work has officially begun on replacing a 55-year-old sewage pump station at Nelson Reserve in the Gympie CBD.
The $1.4 million project means the pump, located on the corner of Monkland St and Jaycee Way, will be moved underground, as it no longer meets safety standards.
Gympie Regional Council has fenced off access to the northern car park in Nelson Reserve for the upgrade.
In April, infrastructure director Jim Grayson said replacing the pump should put an end to bad smells coming from the station, which were noticeable in Nelson Reserve.
