A Gold Coast LNP MP has posted security footage of a group of youths apparently trying to break into his home overnight and triggering the alarm.

Surfers Paradise MP John-Paul Langbroek shared the footage to social media on Friday morning, tagging Queensland police in the post.

The footage shows the youths in his yard in the up-market waterfront suburb of Clear Island Waters before clambering over a canal embankment as the alarm goes off.

Police responded to the post on X, formerly Twitter, advising the MP to use an online link to report suspicious activity.

Mr Langbroek said he disturbed four youths near his back veranda just before 2am and “yelled at them just as they strolled back down the street”.

A neighbour said his security cameras “picked up one youth wearing a grey hoodie” at 1.53am walking in his yard, while another resident said five youths were seen walking around a neighbour’s cars.

Mr Langbroek told The Courier-Mail he was awoken by his alarm and after checking his security camera, rushed out onto the back verandah of his two-storey home to see the youths walking away.

“They were strolling out of the front yard,” he said.

“I yelled out ‘you right?’ and they just said ‘yeah mate’ as casually and nonchalantly as you like.

“They must have caught up with a fifth guy who was in someone else’s backyard.

“It’s extremely disturbing and unsettling. They were definitely there for nefarious purposes.

“Everyone’s got to be vigilant which unfortunately means everyone’s hyper-vigilant. It’s a terrible way to live, especially for elderly people who are now petrified when they see youths walking around in a group.”

Mr Langbroek said even as an MP, “I don’t feel like I have any police who I can call”.

“I didn’t want to call Triple 0 and clog that up because it wasn’t a full-blown emergency as such, which is why I put it on X and tagged the police,” he said.

“I’m not expecting special treatment but even as an MP, I’m as powerless as everyone else and that’s the frustration.

“I’m not bagging the police, they’re doing the best they can with the resources they have.

“People across the state feel that there just aren’t enough police to do the patrols.”

It’s the second time in less than a year that Mr Langbroek has shared footage to highlight Queensland’s youth crime crisis.

Last August, he took to Instagram to share footage of a man trying to kick in the front door of his neighbour’s home.

“My street. My neighbour. Broad daylight. Never seen this in 30 years we’ve lived in our house,” he captioned the footage.

‘Get real Queensland Labor. Give Queensland Police Service the resources they need.’
