A drunk man armed himself with scissors in a surgical ward at a Queensland hospital and threatened to stab staff, a court has heard.

Warren James Sturt, 42, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on November 6 to public nuisance.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said at 9.30pm on May 20, police were called to Townsville University Hospital where there was an incident in the surgical ward.

Sgt Hoskins said Sturt was intoxicated, aggressive towards staff and patients and security had to be called.

When security asked Sturt to settle down, he called them “white dogs”.

Sgt Hoskins said hospital staff were present when Sturt then picked up a pair of scissors and said words to the effect of: “I’ve got a pair of scissors here, I’m going to stab you dog c****.”

Sturt eventually left the ward and when police arrived, they found him at the front entrance of the hospital.

The court heard that Sturt acknowledged that he “lost it” at the hospital and things “got out of hand.”

It was also told Sturt had a 14-page criminal history and even though he was on a suspended sentence, this was a fine only offence.

The prosecution submitted a $1000 fine would be appropriate.

Solicitor Bianca Wieland said Sturt had been sentenced for other matters in July but this offence had not been dealt with.

She submitted for this offence, Sturt, who does carpentry work, could be convicted and not further punished.

“He is remorseful for his actions,” Ms Wieland said.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan decided to convict Sturt and not further punish him.

A conviction was recorded.
