A man threatened to kill a child in an unprovoked, horrifying domestic violence ordeal.
The man, 42, who cannot be named for legal reasons pleaded guilty on Friday to multiple offences including contravention of a domestic violence order.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said the worst of the man’s offending took place on June 3.
She said police were called to Saxonvale Ct, New Auckland in relation to domestic violence at about 11am.
Sergeant Hoskins said the victim told police she was in bed asleep when she heard banging on her window and located the defendant in her backyard.
She said the victim opened her backdoor and received a tirade of abuse from the defendant, who believed she had been cheating on him.
Sergeant Hoskins said the victim’s son then walked outside and the defendant turned his aggression towards him, stating words to the effect of “when I get out of jail, I’ll find you, I’m going to kill you.”
She said the defendant then punched both the victim and child in the face and police later observed a small abrasion to the victim’s lower lip.
The victim then fled the scene, taking the witness with her, however, the man’s tirade was not over.
He proceeded to punch several windows, smashing one in the kitchen then flipped a glass table and attempted to use the metal table legs to gain entry to the house.
The victim stated while the defendant was carrying out the frightening attack, he was continually threatening to kill both her and her child.
She told police she believed if the defendant had gained access to the house he would have killed her and she feared for her life.
Police located the defendant walking along Emmadale Drive heading in the direction of the victim’s house on June 4, about 1am.
Police called out to the defendant and told him to stop, to which the defendant turned and ran from police.
Police chased the offender across the road and took out their tasers before arresting the defendant.
While being placed in the police car, the defendant tensed and refused to enter, meaning police had to physically put the defendant in the car.
When questioned, the defendant stated he could not remember attending the defendant’s address and he was subsequently issued a notice to appear.
Ms Hoskins said the defendant had a history of ungoverned violence and imprisonment was the only form of deterrence which was suitable.
Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and sentenced the defendant to 18 months imprisonment with an immediate parole release date given 70 days being registered as time already serviced. Convictions were recorded.
