A man who stole from two Central Queensland businesses committed one of the thefts to feed his pregnant girlfriend, a court has heard.

Angelo Anfernee Warner, 22, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on November 13 to two counts each of stealing and contravening a police direction.

The court heard that on July 11, Warner stole Prosecco wine worth $28 from Liquorland at New Auckland because he was “thirsty.”

Then on August 7, Warner stole $224.60 worth of groceries from a Woolworths store.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said Warner told police he was homeless, didn’t have money to pay for food, his girlfriend was currently pregnant and he needed the food for both of them.

The two contravene police direction charges related to Warner not attending a police station to provide identification and a DNA sample.

The court heard that Warner had a one-page criminal history.

Solicitor Bianca Wieland said Warner was now employed.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Warner $650 and convictions were recorded.
