A woman with substance abuse problems is accused of chasing down a man in her car through the streets and along a highway on New Year’s Day, dangerously driving without her glasses on, sparking calls from witnesses to police, a court heard.
Lyndelle Jane Ramsey, 49, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle after the protracted incident in Calliope, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on January 2 during a bail application hearing.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said Ms Ramsey was on bail at the time for other offences allegedly committed against the same victim.
“It would appear she was trying to chase this person down,” she said.
“She told police she was trying to herd the victim with her car.
“She was certainly acting as though she was very much under the influence of drugs.”
Sergeant Hoskins said it was alleged Ms Ramsey was not wearing her prescription glasses while driving.
“He’s got her mobile phone,” she said.
“She wants it back and she takes off like this, no glasses on... and makes the streets of Calliope and the main road and a highway a really dangerous place to be for that period of time.”
Sergeant Hoskins said people from all over the area were calling people, from the carpark or the shopping centre, with witnesses reports painting a picture of “extremely dangerous” conduct.
“There was some footage,” she said.
“Several times she’s lost control of the vehicle.
“It’s quite providential that nobody was hurt at all and it seems that the car was not damaged.
“It just seems that her temper is getting the better of her more often than can really safely deal with at the moment.”
Sergeant Hoskins said it was alleged Ms Ramsey was under the influence of drugs and “was out of control”.
Defence lawyer Ricky Lynch said his client had no intention of striking the victim with the vehicle.
He said her night in the watchhouse was her first time incarcerated and it was a wake up call.
Mr Lynch said Ms Ramsey owned the unit she lives in and had not previously breached bail conditions.
He said she wasn’t under the influence of alcohol but “she does have some issues with substance abuse”.
Acting magistrate Stephen Byrne said Ms Ramsey was on bail at the time for serious assault of a person over 60, common assault and wilful damage, which are to be mentioned next in Gladstone Magistrates Court on February 10.
He said he believed she was a serious risk of committing further offences and refused to grant her bail.
Ms Ramsey was remanded in custody and her fresh charges were adjourned to February 10 in Gladstone Magistrates Court.
