Drivers face Gladstone Magistrates Court this week charged with a variety of offences

A number of people faced Gladstone Magistrates Court this week charged with driving offences, including drink and drug driving.

Justin William Wallace, 41

A man out on a midnight bike ride along a busy Gladstone thoroughfare was intercepted by police and found to be grossly intoxicated.

Justin William Wallace, 41, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to did drive or attempts to put in motion or in charge of horse/animal/vehicle whilst UIL.

A court heard that on November 4, around 12.10am police observed Wallace riding a bike along the Dawson Highway, Gladstone.

Wallace was swerving back and forth over two lanes, which forced police to U-turn and follow him before they intercepted him.

When he tried to dismount his bike and move onto the footpath he was unsteady on his feet, smelt of alcohol and slurred his speech.

Wallace admitted he was probably three or four times over the legal limit, and a blood alcohol test returned a positive result of .163.

He was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined $800 and ordered to complete thirty hours of community service in 12 months. A conviction was recorded.

James Allan Simpson, 42

A man was intercepted by police highly intoxicated at the wheel of his van with a young girl in the passenger seat, a court heard.

James Allan Simpson, 42, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to driving Under the Influence of Liquor.

A court heard Tannum Sands police were called a Boyne Island address in relation to a disturbance.

Police received information a woman was attempting to get car keys off her intoxicated ex-partner who was planning to drive.

Around 11.05pm, police were driving on Boyne Island Road when a silver coloured van approached in the opposite direction, crossing the middle dividing lanes as it passed police.

Police had to veer in order to avoid hitting the van.

The van was located on Gladstone Benaraby Road in Toolooa and police had a conversation with Simpson.

He admitted to drinking alcohol and police opened the driver’s door, only for Simpson to stumble out of the van.

Police attempted to ask Simpson questions about his actions before getting behind the wheel, but he was uncooperative and obviously drunk given his slurred speech.

Police took Simpson back to the Gladstone watch house where a breath test was conducted, it returned a blood-alcohol reading of .191.

Simpson’s licence was immediately suspended and he told police he would lose his employment and more than likely have to move back to New Zealand.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and placed Simpson on 12 months probation. A conviction was recorded.

Breanna Jade Barlow, 21

An evening drive cost a Gladstone woman dearly as she was found to be driving while unlicensed.

Breanna Jade Barlow, 21, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to the charge.

A court heard on November 4, around 8.35pm, police intercepted a car at the intersection of Toolooa and Short streets and Barlow identified herself as the driver.

Police checks on Barlow’s license found she was unlicensed, having been suspended on October 28, 2021.

She was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined Barlow $300 and suspended her from driving for six months.

Warren Bruce Sanders, 57

A defendant who refused to take his customised, and illegal, registration plate off his Toyota Landcruiser wound up in court recently.

Warren Bruce Sanders, 57, pleaded guilty to vehicles used on roads must be registered and driving an uninsured vehicle.

A court heard on November 1, around 12.45pm, Sanders was intercepted driving his Toyota Landcruiser on the Dawson Highway, Gladstone.

The ute had no registration plate on the vehicle, instead it had a black plate with white writing which read “AMEN”.

When asked if the ute was registered to be on Queensland roads, Sands said it was not registered as it was not a vehicle, it was an automobile.

Sanders was subsequently issued a notice to appear before Gladstone Magistrates Court, with the ute immobilised for seven days.

A court heard Sanders was previously charged for the same offence 10 days before the incident which will be heard in court on November 30, 2021.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined Sanders $600 and recorded a conviction against him.

Joshua Allan Munro, 37

A man made immediate admissions to police of smoking from a meth pipe before being intercepted driving.

Joshua Allan Munro, 37, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to drug driving.

A court heard that on October 14, around 2.46pm, police intercepted Munro driving on Gladstone-Benaraby Road, Toolooa for a random breath test and licence check.

Munro’s drug test gave a positive result and he was taken to Gladstone Police Station for further testing.

When questioned, Munro admitted to smoking a pipe which contained meth.

He was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined $900 and suspended him from driving for three months.

Glenda Campbell, 63

A woman was intercepted driving on a suspended learner licence in the Gladstone region, a court heard.

Glenda Campbell, 63, pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving on Tuesday.

A court heard on August 18, around 10am, Mount Larcom police were patrolling Salisbury Street when they observed Campbell driving on Salisbury Street, Mount Larcom.

Police intercepted the car and spoke to the driver, before police checks revealed Campbell was driving on a suspended learners licence.

The licence expired on March 26 and was SPER suspended on August 6.

Police questioned Campbell regarding her licence and she said she did not have a driver’s licence.

Campbell was issued a notice to appear in Gladstone Magistrates Court.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined Campbell $400 and suspended her from driving for one month.
