A man described as a “menace” when drinking has fronted court for punching a security guard and causing a scuffle that ended with a policeman nursing a dislocated shoulder.

Connor John Richard Allam and a group of friends were on a night out in October when things quickly spiralled into dangerous territory.

Police prosecutor Merilyn Hoskins described the 24-year-old as a “menace” when he was intoxicated, as she recounted the events that unfolded outside Gladstone’s popular Reef Hotel.

Sergeant Hoskins said Allam and a group of friends became abusive toward a hotel security guard who asked them to leave, with Allam then punching the security guard in the head.

The court heard Allam began taunting the security guard from outside and goading him to fight, before jumping on a stranger’s vehicle and snapping the side mirror off.

Police later attempted to arrest him at the Gladstone Yacht Club, but he tensed his arms and told police, “you’re going to have fight me for this one”.

Sergeant Hoskins said Allam resisted police for an extended period of time, with one officer falling during the struggle and dislocating his shoulder.

Defence lawyer Rio Ramos told the court her client conceded he was “an absolute idiot” and regretted his actions.

She said Allam was out celebrating a friend’s birthday and accepted he couldn’t handle alcohol at the time.

Acting Magistrate Mary Buchanan chastised Allam, telling him police were “not there to be your punching bag”, and noting he had a history of alcohol-fuelled violence.

Allam pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to common assault in a public place while adversely affected by alcohol, fail to leave licensed premises, wilful damage and serious obstruction of police officer.

He was placed on probation for 12 months and ordered to serve 80 hours of community service.

No conviction was recorded.

Allam was also ordered to pay restitution of $1600 for the damaged vehicle, and $800 to the police officer.
