A Central Queensland court heard a shocking case last week where a mother was given a suspended jail sentence after choosing her paedophile boyfriend over her children.

The court was told the Gladstone woman had been residing with her partner, a registered child sex offender, for the past decade - her decision effectively meaning none of her children could live under the same roof.

But that life choice backfired when the mother, who by law cannot be named, violently attacked her partner on three occasions.

She entered a bedroom where her partner (the aggrieved in a domestic violence order) was asleep and started slapping him to the face and body.

She then grabbed a hold of him and dragged him around the home.

Another violent incident occurred where she hit the man over the head with a coffee cup, causing it to smash.

On another occasion the pair had a verbal argument when the woman allegedly punched him in the face, and threw his phone against a wall, causing it to crack.

In Gladstone Magistrates Court on Wednesday (July 26), the woman pleaded guilty to nine offences - seven counts of contravening a domestic violence order and two breaches of bail.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Kevin Ongheen said while there was “a variety” of offending on the woman’s three-page criminal history, it predominantly featured domestic violence offences.

Sgt Ongheen said the woman had been placed on probation numerous times previously, as well as a suspended sentence, for domestic violence offending.

Sgt Ongheen said to the woman’s credit, she had not appeared in a court since 2020, when on that occasion it was for an unrelated offence.

“However the offences that she has pleaded guilty to today (July 26) are serious and concerning,” Sgt Ongheen said.

“It is blatant disregard of court orders.”

Solicitor Jun Pepito said the woman’s latest offending was the result of her struggles with alcohol.

Mr Pepito explained the woman’s children could not live with her during her lengthy relationship with the man because he was a reportable offender, and the solicitor said that had been her choice.

Mr Pepito said the woman choosing the relationship with the man over her children had caused troubles.

Mr Pepito said the woman realised the relationship had become “toxic”, it ended, and she moved to live with family.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced the woman to six months’ jail, wholly suspended for 18 months, and also placed her on 18 months’ probation.

Convictions were recorded.
