A man who threatened to bash staff during his eviction from a Central Queensland hotel then had to be removed from a roadway by police, a court has heard.

Benjamin Leigh Jensen, 40, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court on January 10 where he pleaded guilty to charges including public nuisance in the vicinity of licensed premises and stealing.

The court heard that on November 26 last year, Jensen stole a $149 carton of Jack Daniel’s pre-mixed drinks from The Club Hotel Gladstone.

Then on the same day, Jensen and other people were evicted from a room at Gladstone’s Young Australia Hotel.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said Jensen yelled at and threatened staff before police found him standing in the middle of a road, impeding traffic, while affected by alcohol and drugs.

The court heard that Jensen yelled at staff: “I’ll bash you, you c..ts.”

It was told that Jensen had a six-page criminal history and just one month prior to these offences, he was placed on two suspended sentences for similar offending.

“Over the last 20 years, he has been repeatedly charged with public nuisance, alcohol and drug-related offending,” Sgt Hoskins said.

“In my submission, (Jensen) hasn’t learnt from his actions and he hasn’t taken up the opportunities that the courts have given him.”

Solicitor Rio Ramos said unfortunately Jensen had a “serious drug addiction” as well as problems with alcohol.

She said he was employable having previously worked on Curtis Island and once released from custody, he planned to stay in Rockhampton “for a while.”

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Jensen to two months’ jail and activated both suspended sentences.

She declared 45 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served and fixed immediate parole release.

Convictions were recorded.
