A Gladstone mother of six was on suspended jail sentences when she stole a $7.99 bottle of wine from a local hotel, a court has heard.

Alexia Anne Bailey, 37, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on May 30 to stealing.

Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said about 7.35pm on February 20, Bailey attended Young Australian Hotel at Gladstone Central where she put a bottle of passion pop in her handbag and left without paying.

The court heard that when Bailey committed this theft, she was on suspended sentences for crimes including stealing.

It was told Bailey had an 11-page criminal history and the prosecution sought restitution of $7.99.

Solicitor Pierre Lammersdorf said Bailey, a mother of six, had struggled with alcohol and drug abuse since the age of 13, but she had been sober now “for a couple of months”.

Acting Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Bailey $300 and ordered she pay the restitution.

Ms Buchanan did not activate the suspended sentences but extended their operational periods by three months.

A conviction was recorded.
