Central Queensland, including Rockhampton, Gladstone and Biloela, bore the brunt of a vicious storm system which brought with it hailstones and heavy rain on Monday.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman explained the reasoning behind the wild start to the week, blaming a warm and humid air mass residing over southeastern districts.
“Together with strong winds aloft associated with an upper trough generated severe thunderstorms this afternoon,” the spokesman said.
“Severe thunderstorms were experienced which brought with them damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall.”
Severe storm warnings were active across most of Central Queensland throughout the day, before being cancelled in the later afternoon.
Golf Ball size hail was reported at Mt Larcom on Monday morning and the Bureau was also investigating reports of a tornado at Bracewell.
