Usually, Gladstone Regional Council acting Mayor Kahn Goodluck is fighting for the best interest of his Local Government Area’s residents.
However, the boilermaker by trade has put his hand up to participate in a new type of fight which is sure to put bums in seats come July.
Mr Goodluck will take on good friend and fellow tradesman Mathew Clarke at Mixed Martial Arts organisation Beast Championship’s ‘Tradie Wars’ on Saturday, July 2.
The event, which will be held at Calliope Roosters Indoor Sports Centre, will help raise funds for the Young Veterans organisation.
Mr Goodluck said his return to cage fighting came about via a conversation with mates last week.
“I said that I would do it if it was raising money for charity and next thing I knew the Beast Championship’s boss Jason Hoad was teeing it up,” he said.
“It is too late to back out now, Jason is a mover and shaker with this sort of thing and we have a couple of other tradies jumping in the cage to.”
Mr Goodluck said for he and Mr Clarke the fight was also about how they could get the best out of their preparations.
“I plan to lose 15 kilograms by the time the fight night comes around just through training,” he said.
“It is good for my health and fitness and we will jump in the cage on the night with a big smile on our faces and give the people a show.”
Mr Goodluck said it had been a long time since he had participated in Mixed Martial Arts, however, he was keen to get back into it.
“I competed in mixed martial arts for a few years in my early 20s, I love the discipline and respect in the sport, it is quite a good influence on people’s lives,” he said.
“I probably haven’t done as much training as I would have liked to, life gets in the way, but this is a great opportunity to get back into the health and fitness space.”
