What started as a hobby has propelled Gladstone student Hugh Jobling to the summit of Central Queensland’s robotics scene.
Hugh was recently crowned the winner of the Central Queensland Junior Robotics Secondary Rescue Line Competition at CQUniversity in Rockhampton with his creation, ACC Roberto.
What made the win even more impressive, aside from the fact Hugh beat 27 people, was he only picked up robotics a couple of years ago.
“My robot had to follow a line, dodge obstacles like a water tower, go over bumps then find the person at the end and rescue them and my robot was able to do that,” Hugh said.
“It took me about a week to build the robot but the programming took about three weeks to fully complete.”
Hugh said he had not given much thought to his employment future, however a role in the coding industry would be right up his alley.
“I haven’t thought of any jobs but something that includes programming is something that I am definitely going to pursue when I make it into the workforce,” he said.
Hugh’s dad Brian said his son was given a robotics kit two years ago but really jumped into it this year.
“He got a few more bits and pieces and found he could make some cool stuff that could work by itself,” he said.
“He has always been interested in mechanical type stuff, he’s got a motorbike and likes to do all his own stuff on it, so he’s very practical.”
Mr Jobling said he was stoked with his son’s achievements and to see him get in and do it himself.
“He has just been practising and testing, so the win was really good to give him that sense of achievement,” he said.

Hugh said his aspirations for the future were to continue developing his award-winning robot and competing at the State Championships.
