It has been four months since the 2021 Gladstone Region Youth Council was assembled, with councillors recently commending their achievements.

In a general meeting on July 6, Gladstone Regional Council was provided an update on the work and achievements Gladstone’s Youth Council had been involved in so far this year.

Aaron Yea, Alexa Marxsen, Brooke Assman, Charlise Falconer, Layla Dow, Rommiel Malig, Stella Porter, Tayla Cubis, William Patrick and Gypsy Cantwell were officially appointed in a general meeting on April 6.

Brooke Assman and Layla Dow were later both appointed as co-chair on the council.

So far, the 2021 Youth Council has participated in council’s meet and greet event, a governance workshop, Youth Week, Mayor’s Youth Breakfast, Amazing Race and National Volunteers Week.

At this year’s National Volunteers Week, Charlise Falconer and Brooke Assman co-hosted the Gladstone morning tea alongside the mayor.

Brooke also hosted an Agnes Water event and member Aaron Yea attended the Calliope and Miriam Vale events.

In other achievements, Layla Dow worked with Youth Council to co-ordinate a Youth Resilience Program while Aaron Yea was appointed to the Saiki Sister City Committee.

Gladstone region Mayor Matt Burnett said it was the first detailed report on the youth council that he had seen.

“The team are doing an amazing job,” Mr Burnett said.

Deputy Mayor Kahn Goodluck commended Brooke Assman on her progression after she was appointed to the youth council in 2019.

“I just like to comment on young Brooke, she was a member of our 2019 youth council and I remember her talk at a mental health event two years ago,” Mr Goodluck said.

“To see her co-chair the Mayor’s Breakfast recently and to see the confident young lady she was that morning, it shows how much she’s progressed in two years.

“It blows my mind to see that development in a young person.”

Mr Goodluck said he recommended the region’s youth got involved in Youth Council.

“It shows what a great opportunity Youth Council is for young people.”
The term of the Youth Council membership is from February to November.
